Houston Astros

The Houston Astros is a Major League Baseball team based in Houston , Texas . They are in the Central Division of the National League . The Astros have nine playoffs appearances and have appeared once in the World Series Championship. The Astros set a team record of 12 in 8 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 31 1975. In 2005, for the second time Huston Astros rose above and earned a berth in the National League wildcard. Astros moved forward leaving behind Cardinals to become National League Champions but unfortunately they lost in a 4 game sweep to the World Champion Chicago White Sox. After facing defeating in the hands of the White Sox, the franchise hired veteran outfielder Preston Wilson, re-signed a handful of key players and extended manager Phil Garner's contract. The Astros didn't make many modifications in the off season only because they don't require that.

Their major possession was signing free agent Preston Wilson (.260, 25 90) who was picked up to help provide more offensive stability and potentially replace Bagwell (who may or may not return in 2006). Reliever Trever Miller (2-2 4.06) was also included to help an already strong bullpen. The roster for 2006 season include much of the old faces with Craig Biggio (94 Runs) and Willy Taveras, who led the team in stolen bases with 34 setting the table for the rest of the streak. Expectations are high from Tavares, but he needs to be more patient in his sophomore year to produce more walks. Andy Pettitte who didn't play in 2 of the last 4 may return for the whole 2006 season if he retains good health. With the lineup that includes Brad Lidge, Chad Qualls, former Met Dan Wheeler, lefty Mike Gallo and newly signed Trever Miller, the Houston bullpen is profound and conceivably one of the finest in all of baseball. it is believed that the Astros will receive some competition from the Cubs and St. Louis in 2006. If the pitching can hold itself together and the offense at least match the same numbers as last year they should find themselves in the thick of things within the NL Central. Arrival of the seven-time Cy Young Award winner to Huston could prove most required boost for the franchise which is struggling much like it did with previous year's 15-30 start.

On March, 2000, Enron Field was inaugurated. 3,056,139 fans came to see the exhibition game between the New York Yankees and the Astros. Prior to that, the Astros played their home games in the Astrodome, and the new field was totally a new experience. The Astrodome was pitcher friendly, and the Enron Field was homer friendly. Houston finished the season at 72-90 in 4th Place to mark the club's first sub-.500 season since 1991. The most benefited player that season was Jeff Bagwell who set single-season franchise records with 47 homers. By the end of the season, Bagwell registered 310 career homers and went on to become the 87th major leaguer to reach the 300-homer level. In 2001, the Astros clinched their fourth division title in five years against the Cardinals.

Located in Houston , Texas , Minute Maid Park was Houston 's first retractable-roofed stadium. After playing at the Reliant Astrodome for three decades, in 1995, the Astros threatened the officials to move to northern Virginia . On May 20, 1996 , a delegate task force suggested that Houston and Harris County spend $625 million to build a new baseball stadium and a new downtown basketball arena, and refurbish the Astrodome for football and the rodeo. Eventually, in November 1996, voters approved a referendum to construct a new ballpark in downtown Houston in order to keep the team in Houston . Built on 25 acres of land in downtown Houston at the cost of $250 million, construction began on October 30, 1997 .
