David Eckstein, the Cardinal’s shortstop, embraced the MVP trophy like an adolescent as he strolled across the field and through the Busch Stadium. Eckstein who was playing with a painful shoulder and a body wrapped in bandages, started slow start in the World Series but gave his best in the final three games.
This time, David went eight for 12 in those contests, all Cardinals wins, and walked away with the World Series’ Most Valuable Player trophy after the Cards’ 4-2 win over the Tigers in Game 5.
Manager Tony La Russa, satisfied with Eckstein performance, said “Whenever David is playing, there is absolutely no doubt that our club responds to how hard he plays and how committed he is to doing whatever the team needs. He is a wonderful leader on and off the field and not just quietly. He can also be very vocal. And believe me, he’s more than just guts. He’s a very good player.”
Cardinals, soaked in champagne, celebrated their and David’s success at Bausch Stadium. Ultimately, Eckstein was paid for his efforts.
