Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks won a wide-open race for the NL Cy Young Award, beating out San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman.
The Arizona right-hander obtained 15 out of the possible 32 first-place votes and 103 points based on a 5-3-1 point system. Webb, who went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA and made his first All-Star team, was placed second on seven ballots and third on seven others. No other pitcher was incorporated on every Cy Young Award entry. Johnson was the only Diamondbacks pitcher to receive Cy young award for continuously four times, before Webb.
“It was pretty big emotions. We were very excited for it,” Webb said. “It’s with you forever. To have that title go along with you means a lot.”
