Mike Matheny would never play again, because of persistent post-concussion symptoms. His doctor repudiated to clear the four-time Gold Glove catcher to play in 2007 after a concussion sidelined him for the final four months of last season.

Mike Matheny spent 13 big years in the Major League and through out his career as an MLB player he was favorite of all; his teammates, coaches, managers and fans. His chivalries were rewarded in 2005 with Willie Mac Award for his character and inspiration. Matheny is only among the three receivers in Major League history to catch at least 100 games in a single year without any error, when he played 138 error free contests in 2003 for St. Louis Giants (823 total chances), and now, he possesses a lifetime .994 fielding percentage.
