Boston is America’s most walkable City with diverse ethnic offerings, and premier research institutions. Boston is the capital and the largest city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Boston is one of the oldest and wealthiest cities in the United States with an economy relying primarily on education, health care, finance, and high technology. The city’s story constantly narrates its expansion into surrounding areas. In its 5 centuries of existence, the city’s growth is paced by its continuous addition and renovation of outlying neighborhoods, the most prominent being the 17th and 18th centuries. The Back Bay and Fenway were the focus of development in the 19th century. Also known as the ‘Athens of America' the glory of the city also radiates through its grand architecture, its population of literati, artists and world-renowned academic and cultural institutions. The history of Boston is incomplete without mentioning the miserable condition of the Red Sox team following the trade of Babe Ruth. The colony of Massachusetts Bay was established in 1630, when the elder John Winthrop, official representative of the Massachusetts Bay Company settled there.
Right from the beginning the area was the centre of Puritan culture and life in the New World. Citizenship in Massachusetts was restricted to church members until 1664. By the early 1700s Boston became New England's largest and most important city. The city drew London's attention tremendously since it had already become chief city in the region. When King George III and Parliament imposed taxes on the colonies, Boston became the first city to suffer the burden of tax. The Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party signaled the development of revolutionary sentiments. The Battle of Bunker Hill fueled the revolutionary sentiments and the Bostonians declared independence from the British crown. The aftermath of the Revolutionary War was the economical instability of the city. But as new trading relationships developed, Boston entered into the phase of commercial and industrial boom which lasted from the late 1700s until the mid-1800s with great fortunes in shipbuilding, maritime trade and manufacturing textiles and shoes. In 1822, Boston was chartered as a city. In the 20th century the city became culturally diverse.
The ethnicity became varied with the arrival of Irish and Italian immigrants, the Ottoman Empire and Portugal. Economically it also boomed due to medical education, treatment and research, and USA's premier university centre. In the new millennium, Boston entered a phase of revitalization becoming a hub of intellects. Revere, Chelsea, Everett, Somerville, Cambridge, Watertown, Newton, and Quincy, and the towns of Winthrop, Brookline, Needham, Dedham, Canton, and Milton border the city of Boston. The weather here is unpredictable. The summers are usually warm and humid, while the winters are cold and wind with blizzard in month of October. The Irish form the largest ethnic group in the city since Boston is the capital of "Irish America". White, Black or African American, Native American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, also contribute to the population of the city. The Boston area is well known for its colle ges and universities. Harvard University is the nation's oldest university, founded in Cambridge. The Boston Ballet, The Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival, the Boston Early Music Festival, The Boston Film Festival, add to the art and culture of the city. Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General), which is affiliated with the Harvard Medical School and is rated as one of the best in the world. The city houses four major league sports teams. The attractions of the city are Beacon Hill, Cambridge, Charlestown- a living museum of Boston's shipbuilding past., Faneuil Hall- Faneuil Hall and the adjacent Quincy Market form one of the country's first mixed-use commercial developments, North End- Boston's oldest neighborhood and home to much of the city's Italian population. Logan International Airport, located in the East Boston neighborhood of the city, is the major airport serving Boston. The roads of the city are very confusing since they are not built according to a proper grid system.
