Miami in its formative years was inhabited by Tequesta Indians who lived there for approximately 2000 years. The region in and around was covered mostly with swampland vegetation. Settlements emerged in 1821 but the growth was relatively slow due to the lack of well-organized route to the north. The growth of Miami can be contributed to Julia Tuttle who persuaded Henry Flagler to expand the railroad he was building to the area. In 1896, the city began to grow with the opening of the Florida East Coast Railroad form Miami to the U.S. Miami's first luxurious hotel, The Royal Palm was inaugurated by Henry Flagler. The success patronized John Collins and Carl Fisher change a mangrove marsh into Miami Beach. The city had already come under the boom of transformation. Immediately after a decade George Merrick established the well designed residential community of Coral Gables along with Spanish street names carved into white stones, concourses, and mall fountains. By 1920s people started possessing personal estate. People started spending extravagantly and started following flamboyant lifestyles. But with the sudden emergence of two devastating hurricanes Miami’s progress came to a halt.
The city wore a deserted look and looked like a weird monster. The city took almost three decade to come out of the depression and soon became "America's Casablanca" with tourism as its mainstay. Cuban and Cuban Jewish immigrants made the city a global trade center.International commerce took downtown by storm and a city was born. Miami is a city situated in southeast Florida in Miami-Dade County on the Miami River. It is cozily settled between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean in the U.S. This county-seat features many towns and cities, including Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, North Bay Village, Sunny Isles, North Miami Beach, Aventura, North Miami, Opa-Locka, Miami Lakes, Hialeah, Medley, Miami Springs, Pinecrest, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Islandia, Sweetwater, Homestead, and Miami Shores. When the city officially came into existence it had a population of just over 300. Currently the region is an abode of 2.2 million inhabitants living in the city and vicinity. Due to the internal migration there is an explosion in the population growth. Three ships of the U.S. Navy have been named USS Miami in to pay obeisance to the city.
“Miami” is a Native American word for "sweet water.” Since the city is near to Latin America, it has become the command center of Latin American operations including American Airlines, Cisco, Disney, Exxon, FedEx, Microsoft, Oracle, SBC Communications and Sony. As mentioned earlier tourism is the m ainstay and an important business, the beaches of Greater Miami confirm the verity by attracting visitors from across the country and around the world. Numerous large corporations are centered in and around Miami, including Burger King, Norwegian Cruise Line etc. Miami International Airport is one of the busiest international airports in the world and The Port of Miami, is the largest cruise ship port in the world. It also trade in nearly ten million tons of cargo per annum. People can locally commute through Metrobus and Metrorail. The city also houses four professional sports team. Florida Marlins of MLB, Miami Dolphins of NFL, Miami Heat of NBA and Florida Panthers of NHL. According to the survey conducted in 2000, Miami is one of the nations poorest cities since 27.9 percent of civilians have an income below the centralized guidelines for poverty. Every year thousands of visitors come to visit the city of Miami.
