Oakland City is a municipality located in Gibson County, in the metro area of Evansville. According to the survey conducted in 2003, the city had a population of 2,587. Positioned in the perfect settings of eastern shores of San Francisco Bay, Oakland is a colorful city with serene weather, rich arts and culture, sumptuous dining and plenty of enthusiastic activities. The city is ranked the sixth largest city in California and covers 54 square miles. The first inhabitants of Oakland were the Ohlone Indians which was a hunting and gathering ethnic group. The area was discovered by the Spanish people in the 1770's. On May 4, 1852, Oakland received a license and in 1854, it became an integrated city with a legally appointed Mayor and Council. In 1870, Lake Merritt became America's first state game harbor and currently is the only natural brine lake located in the hub of a city.
