Fenway Park Stadium

Opened on 20 th April 1912 , the Fenway Park is located near the Fenway neighborhood in Boston . It is the oldest ballpark in the major leagues. Known for its Green Monster, a 37-foot high wall that extends straight from left field to center field, Fenway Park houses the Boston Red Sox, a Major League Baseball franchise, placed in the American League. Known as a hitter's ballpark, particularly during July and August when the wind blows out to left field. From 1933 to 1936, the NFL's Boston Redskins played their home games at Fenway Park . From 1963 to 1968 the American Football League's Boston Patriots played their home games at Fenway. During the 1914 World Series, the Red Sox one-time cross-town rivals, Boston Braves used Fenway as their home ground. The ballpark hosted All Star Game in 1946, 1961 & 1999 and World Series in1912, 1914, 1918, 1946, 1967, 1975, 1986, & 2004. Carl Yastrzmski blasted his 3,000 hit on September 12, 1979 at Fenway.

Until 1912, the Red Sox played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds which is currently the possession of Northeastern University 's campus. In 1904, General Charles Henry Taylor, a Civil War veteran purchased the club for his son John I. Taylor. In 1910, Taylor declared to make a new ballpark for his much treasured team since he was completely exhausted arranging lease for the Huntington Avenue Grounds. Taylor named the new ballpark Fenway Park because of its location in the Fenway section of Boston . Fenway Park hosted its first professional baseball game on April 20, 1912 . The Red Sox bested the New York Highlanders, now known as the Yankees by 7-6 in 11 innings.

The 10 feet wall that ran in the left side of the arena became famous as Duffy's Cliff. The Sox' Duffy Lewis was so adept at playing balls hit to that ridge that it became known as Duffy's Cliff. The infrastructure off the arena remained same until 1926. It was only after a fire breakout along the left field line, the charred bleachers were removed out of the park. Because of the lack of revenue, the then owner of the team, John Quinn didn't bother to rebuild the bleachers. In 1933, Tom Yawkey, purchased the club and began a major overhaul of the park. The renovation came to a standstill when second fire breakout devastated the facility for more than five hours. Construction crews worked diligently to reconstruct the ballpark in time for the season opener on April 17, 1934 . As a part of renovation concrete seats replaced the wooden bleachers. 37-foot wooden left field wall was replaced by 37-foot sheet metal structure. Concrete bleachers were replaced by the wood bleachers in centerfield and Duffy's Cliff was partially leveled off. In 1936, a 23-1/2-foot tall screen was installed on top of the wall. In 1947, the Park was given the look of the Green Monster when the walls used for commercializing were covered by green paint. In 1988-89, stadium club seats were constructed above grandstand behind home plate. The clubhouses at Fenway are small and comfortable.

The Sox fans have been continuously crowding Fenway's comfortable confines, pushing the Red Sox average attendance to over 2.5 million into the 21st century. It has one of the last hand-operated scoreboards in baseball in the left-field wall. Green and red lights are used to signal balls, strikes and outs. A seat in the right field bleachers is painted in red to mark the spot where Ted Williams hit the home run on June 9, 1946 off Fred Hutchinson of the Detroit Tigers at 502 feet. Before the 2003 season, a seating section was constructed on top of the Green Monster (bar style seats).

The Sox in the park's first year won the World Series at Fenway and by 1918, tasted the victory three more times, but it took them another 86 years before they won it again, probably because of the curse of Bambino. Fenway is an embodiment of the great achievements marked by the legends.
